Appointments take about 3 hours from consultation to blowout. That includes the painting, processing time (usually 30 to 45 minutes under a processor), a toner application to fine-tune the shade, a deep conditioning treatment, and a styled blowout so you leave looking finished.

Maintenance is where balayage really shines compared to other color techniques. Because the highlights are painted away from the root, regrowth is virtually invisible. Most clients return every 10 to 14 weeks, which means 4 to 5 appointments per year instead of 8 to 12. Between visits, use the sulfate-free shampoo your colorist recommends to prevent fading.
