The honest answer to what hair extensions cost is that nobody can quote you accurately over the phone, and any salon that does is either guessing or quoting a number they intend to revise once you are in the chair. That is not evasion. It is arithmetic. The single largest line item in an extension install is the hair itself, and how much hair you need depends on your head, not on a price list.

Why extensions are quoted at consultation

The amount of hair. A client with fine hair who wants modest length might need a fraction of what a client with thick, coarse hair needs for the same visual result. Thick hair requires more hair to blend, not less, because the extensions have to match the density already there or the join shows. This is the single biggest cost driver and it is the one clients are most often surprised by.

The color match. If your natural color matches available stock, you pay for the hair and the install. If you are a dimensional blonde with three tones through the mid-lengths, your stylist may need to color the extension hair before it goes in, which adds both product and chair time. Extensions that are not properly matched are the most common reason a set looks obviously fake.

The install method and the head. Row placement depends on where your hair is dense enough to anchor a weft safely. Some heads take three rows comfortably. Some take two. Some need a shorter row at the crown and a full row below. Your stylist maps this on your actual head during the consultation.

What the consultation covers

The consultation is where the quote gets built, and it is worth booking even if you are only exploring. Your stylist assesses the density and condition of your natural hair, checks whether your hairline and nape can hold an anchor safely, matches color against your hair in natural light rather than under salon bulbs, and talks through how much length and volume you actually want. You leave with a number and a plan, not a range.

We will also tell you when extensions are the wrong call. Hair that is mid-recovery from a bleach session, or a scalp with active irritation, is not a candidate until it has settled. Installing over compromised hair is how people end up with breakage at the anchor points, and no amount of length is worth that.

The costs people forget

The install is not the whole spend, and a salon that does not tell you this up front is setting you up for a bad surprise in three months.

Move ups. As your natural hair grows, the rows move down the head and need repositioning. Most clients come back every six to eight weeks. Move up appointments are also priced at consultation, because the work varies with how much the rows have travelled and whether any hair needs replacing.

Removal. Extension removal starts from $200 and takes about thirty minutes. Do not attempt this at home. The cost of a professional removal is trivial next to the cost of repairing hair that was pulled out by someone working blind at the back of their own head.

Styling. A shampoo style with hair extensions starts from $85 and runs about an hour, longer than a standard shampoo style because there is more hair to work through and the rows need care around the anchors.

Home care. You will need a sulfate-free cleanser and a proper loop brush. This is not a large expense but it is not optional either. The wrong brush will shred a weft.
