About Edgar Haircut at Salon Envy® San Antonio

The Edgar is defined by its front: a fringe cut straight across in a hard horizontal line, worn short and forward, with the sides and back taken up high and tight so the contrast between top and sides does the work. It goes by other names depending on who you ask, including the takuache cut, and it has been one of the most requested shapes among young men across South Texas for several years now. We book it as the Envy Men's Haircut® at $45. There is no separate menu item, because it is a men's cut and pricing it as anything else would be a gimmick.

What separates a good Edgar from a bad one is entirely the fringe line. It has to be cut to sit level against the forehead, which means accounting for how your hairline actually falls rather than just cutting straight across and hoping. Cowlicks at the front, a receding corner, or a hairline that drops on one side all change where the line has to be placed for it to read as level once the hair settles. A stylist who cuts the fringe under tension and does not check it dry will hand you a line that looks crooked the moment you walk out.

The cut works best on hair with enough weight and density to hold a blunt edge. Straight to slightly wavy hair takes it most easily. If your hair is coarse, thick, and grows forward, that is close to ideal. Tighter curl patterns can absolutely wear the shape, but the fringe will need to be cut longer to account for shrinkage, and it will want either a blow-dry with a flat brush or a light smoothing product to sit flat. Your stylist will tell you honestly what your hair will and will not do before starting.

This is a high-maintenance shape. The whole look depends on the contrast between a tight taper and a heavy fringe, and both of those soften fast. Most clients come back every two to three weeks. If you stretch it to five or six, you no longer have an Edgar, you have a grown-out crop. Plan the cadence before you commit to it. Some clients book the taper and fringe cleanup between full cuts, which is a shorter appointment and keeps the line sharp without a full reset.

To style it at home, work a small amount of matte product through damp hair, push the fringe forward and down with your fingers rather than a comb, and let it dry flat. Anything shiny or heavy will separate the fringe into strands and break the solid line the cut depends on. We are on Wurzbach Rd, open 9 AM to 7 PM seven days a week, with free parking out front. Walk-ins are welcome, though for a first Edgar we would rather you book so the fringe gets the time it needs.

Specialist Recommendation

First time getting an Edgar? Book rather than walking in. The fringe line is the whole cut, and it is worth the extra minutes to check it dry before you leave the chair.
